Butterflies

I am a homemaker in England and this is my first attempt at trompe l'oeill.

It isn't perfect. I couldn't seem to get the shadows right, and that was juggling a torch in one hand and paper butterfly on a stick in the other! There must be an easier way, I'm sure. But it was fun and i would do it again. The project was small. The fake window is 50cms by 40 cms.

I say to you, I definitely get irked while people consider worries that they plainly do not know about. You have good talent Susan, An easier way to do the butterfly shadow is to merely copy the butterfly outline at various distances from butterfly edge. Use your imagination to "see" the shadow. To add interest and depth make shadows slightly bigger. and/ or closer to butterfly itself. It's also fun to include a small amount of the butterfly wing color into the shadow too, as butterfly wings are semi transparent, under intense light.
I hope this is not too confusing, please forgive me as English is my second language...American is my first.

Butterfly mural

Hi Susan,
A friend has asked me to paint 2 murals on walls in a house that she will make into a gift shop.
Found your mural while looking for mural painting ideas. I think you did very well for the first time. Have you painted any more since?
The ones I plan to paint are a little like cartoons. They will be garden scenes.

some of the butterflies are further away from the wall, they are not all flying in a line about 2 inches away in unison. I wanted some to look closer to wall than others. It was how the shadow came out when i held stick with paper butterfly on at different distances.

Nice job

Overall I think you did a nice job on the effect. I am very impressed for a first try. My only complaint would be that after looking at the painting for a bit I noticed that it doesn't seem that the light came from the same place, as some shadows on butterflies next to each other are cast at different angles.
